Major Areas of Focus

Depression

Picture
For some it's a new feeling, for others it comes and goes, and for some it feels like you've always been there and can't even imagine who you'd be if you weren't depressed. No matter how long you've been there, we can work together to to help you move forward from that dark place.

Anxiety

Picture
It's that exhausting practice of trying to avoid that bad thing that you always feel is right around the corner. It's second (third, fourth...) guessing yourself - feeling like there is always something you're doing wrong, aren't doing enough of, or like something bad is going to happen. Together we can work to address those fears and help you move more freely through the world.

Trauma

Picture
Whether it was from a single incident or an ongoing pattern of abuse, trauma can affect your well-being in many different ways. From difficulty in forming close interpersonal relationships to lacking a feeling of joy/relaxation, or to simply feeling lost and confused, I use a trauma-informed approach and am cognizant of the way trauma symptoms can often mimic other diagnoses. Together we can unpack how the past may be affecting your present, so that you can truly move forward once and for all.

Sexual Functioning and Wellness

You certainly don't need to be having issues related to sex to come see me, but I believe it’s important to be able to talk about sex. While concerns related to sexual functioning and wellness are common, there are also societal taboos and shame that often make us uncomfortable and hesitant to talk about sex. I therefore encourage you to talk with me about sex, sexuality, or anything that may make you feel extra nervous or ashamed.
I also have specific knowledge and experience related to working with:
  • Consensual Non-Monogamy/Ethical Non-monogamy
    • (Polyamory, Swinging and Open relationships)
  • BDSM/Kink
*A special note about "Sex and/or Porn Addiction"

If you are engaging in sexual behaviors in ways that are causing you distress, then I can help. However, I find the term "sex addiction" or this way of conceptualizing the issue to do more harm than good. Despite this term being used regularly, it's important to note that it is not an official diagnosis, as it does not have clear support in research. Based on my experience and training, the "addiction" term tends to add unnecessary shame to already stigmatized behavior and acts as a barrier to change rather than a support (see also AASECT position on sex addiction).

Other areas of focus:

Instead of specializing in just a few areas, I’ve been trained to treat most mental health concerns through the application of different evidence-based techniques. Unfortunately, I can't highlight all of the areas I can help with without adding way to much text.  Below are a few more areas (many of which tend to overlap with those listed above) that I also particularly like helping clients work through:
  • Interpersonal relationships
  • Social anxiety
  • Career Counseling
  • Sleep issues
  • Obsessive-compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Family conflict
  • Emotional Abuse
  • Body Image
  • Stress management
  • Perfectionism
If you have any questions or concerns about whether I'll be able to help, please feel free to ask during our consult call.
