Approach to Therapy

I use evidence-based practice

(and not just cognitive behavioral therapy)
I prioritize creating a warm, empathetic, and nonjudgmental space, as research shows this is the foundation for effective therapy. From there, I integrate and adapt different evidence-based interventions based on your unique needs and concerns.

I welcome feedback
and collaboration

You are the only expert on you!

I'm not here to tell you how to live your life. My role is to use my expertise to help you better understand some of the barriers that have held you back and teach you new skills, strategies, and insights to help you better manage your distress. However, therapy only works when we work together.

Please don't worry about "TMI" with me

I recognize that shame and stigma can often make it difficult to talk about the things we most need to talk about-- but I can't help you if I don't know your concern is. So whether it's about sex, an uncomfortable physical symptom, an intrusive thought or anything in-between, I am here for it and ready to help.

Most often, I focus on direct emotional change

Over my years of work, I have learned that trying to change clients' thought and behavior patterns, while very useful at times, tends to be frustrating for many when used in isolation. Instead, after practicing numerous kinds of interventions, I have found that those built around directly transforming the emotional experience tend to be more effective in helping clients feel better, faster.

For those of you really into psychology here are the main theoretical orientations that I use:

Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT)

EFT aligns well with current outcome research, which shows that the therapeutic relationship is key to successful therapy. It's also based in affective neuroscience and helps clients better understand and use their emotions effectively. EFT allows for the direct transformation of the emotional experience (and I'm guessing that you're here because you're feeling distress).

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

I often integrate CBT as it is the most well researched theoretical orientation and has been shown to be very effective at addressing certain kinds of symptoms and diagnoses.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT is another well researched theoretical orientation. It can be helpful to understanding our thoughts in a different way and providing a clearer picture of how to change our behaviors to facilitate meaningful change.
I will also draw and further integrate from:
  • Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)
  • Interpersonal process
  • Solution-Focused Therapy
